DCT is a digital video cassette, introduced by Ampex in 1992. Professional videographers and (inter)national broadcasters were part of the target audience and could choose from three formats: small, medium and large.

Compression

DCT was a pioneer: it was the first digital videotape with data compression, which made the files smaller to save space. The specific technique that is used to compress was called “discrete cosine transform”, or short: DCT. Now you also know the origin of the name.
